The Ecosystem of Cancer Support

One thing that is truly amazing to experience when your child is touched by cancer is the endless amount of advocacy and non-profits that are out there with the express purpose of supporting patients and their families. From the hat tree, to the Treasure Chest Foundation, to Chemo Duck, you will be hard pressed to find a niche of the cancer experience that isn’t covered by some organization.
Out of nowhere the past couple of weeks, one such organization SuperSibs has been sending things our way. Whereas the examples I mentioned above are geared to the child cancer patient, SuperSibs has a different mission:
Ensuring that siblings of children with cancer are honored, supported, and recognized so they may face the future with strength, courage and hope
Last week they sent a SuperSibs trophy to Sereen’s siblings, rewarding them for their courage and support. Then they sent my middle daughter a pillowcase that she could put on her bed to always remind her of what a “super sibling” she has been for Sereen. And yesterday they sent the letter whose picture is above. ”Sib Share” so that Sereen’s siblings can network other siblings of child cancer patients.
Why such a robust ecosystem of support in the cancer world? Why do a large number of people who have gone through cancer feel inspired to start initiatives to add to this ecosystem? Simple I think - when so much selfless generosity is offered a person the person cannot help but want to give back. A self propelling, virtious circle.
